Early Career
She embarked on her journey in 1974, assuming the role of executive secretary at Sijuade Enterprises in Lagos, Nigeria. Demonstrating exceptional talent, she swiftly rose through the ranks, holding key positions in institutions such as the former First National Bank of Chicago (later FinBank) and the International Merchant Bank of Nigeria. Simultaneously, she pursued her passion for fashion, enrolling in prestigious institutions in London and ultimately founding her fashion label, initially named Supreme Stitches and later rebranded as The Rose of Sharon House of Fashion in 1996.
Venturing into Oil
In 1993, Alakija seized an opportunity in the oil industry, securing an oil prospecting license (OPL) for her company, Famfa Limited, marking a pivotal moment in her career. This license granted her access to explore the Agbami Field, located approximately 100km offshore of Nigeria. Despite facing challenges from the Nigerian government over ownership stakes, she adeptly navigated these obstacles, establishing a successful joint venture with Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited.
Recognition and Achievements
Her significant contributions to the business world have earned her global acclaim. Forbes consistently lists her among the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Moreover, her achievements were further acknowledged when she received an honorary doctorate degree in business administration from Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, in July 2021.
Philanthropic Endeavors
Motivated by an unwavering commitment to philanthropy, Alakija founded the Rose of Sharon Foundation—a beacon of hope for widows and orphans. Through scholarships and business grants, the foundation empowers vulnerable individuals to realize their potential. Additionally, her dedication to education materialized in the form of a generous donation—a skills acquisition center gifted to Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.
Personal Life
In November 1976, Alakija embarked on a lifelong journey of partnership and parenthood when she married Modupe Alakija. Together, they have raised four sons, fostering a nurturing home environment in Lagos, Nigeria. Notably, the marriage of their son Folarin Alakija to Iranian model Nazanin Jafarian Ghaissarifar in June 2017 captured widespread attention, further highlighting the family’s prominence.
