How Mobolaji Ajayi is Revolutionizing Healthcare in Nigeria
Mobolaji Ajayi

Mobolaji Ajayi, the visionary CEO of Purelife Pharmacy, is changing the game in Nigeria’s healthcare scene. She noticed a gap in the market: pharmacies mostly focused on selling medications, but there was little emphasis on primary healthcare services. Ajayi wanted to fill that gap by creating a space where people could get quick, reliable care beyond just picking up prescriptions.

Starting in Lagos in 2021, Purelife Pharmacy combined the traditional pharmacy model with primary care. This innovative approach made it a first-stop healthcare destination for many Nigerians. With family support, she raised initial funding to launch her first store. In just two years, her business has generated revenue ten times the initial investment, all while staying self-funded.

Overcoming Industry Challenges

Running a healthcare business in Nigeria is no easy task. Ajayi faced numerous regulatory hurdles because her venture crosses multiple sectors: pharmacy, medicine, and tech. Navigating these complex regulations was tough, but Ajayi persisted. One of her biggest challenges now is finding and keeping top talent. Many healthcare professionals leave Nigeria for better opportunities abroad, making it hard to recruit skilled staff. Despite this, Purelife has managed to grow its team and open more outlets.

Embracing Digital Healthcare

In 2023, Purelife took a big step by launching a digital platform. Customers can now buy healthcare products online, book lab tests, and consult with doctors from their phones. Purelife also collaborates with third-party healthcare providers for services like blood tests and vaccinations, earning commissions on patient referrals.

Today, Purelife Pharmacy has four branches in Lagos, serving both walk-in customers and fulfilling online orders. Currently, 25% of Purelife’s sales are from online transactions, a figure Ajayi expects to rise as more Nigerians embrace digital healthcare.

Expanding into Wholesale

Ajayi quickly realized that relying on third-party wholesalers for pharmaceutical products wasn’t sustainable. To gain better pricing and quality control, she established Transcend Pharma, a wholesale arm of Purelife Pharmacy. Initially, it supplied only her stores, but it soon expanded to serve other businesses, contributing significantly to her company’s revenue.

Riding the Economic Wave

Nigeria’s economy has faced turbulence recently, with inflation and currency devaluation hitting hard. Ajayi admits it’s been a tough time for business owners. Despite these challenges, her resilience and innovative strategies have kept Purelife Pharmacy growing.

Tapping into New Opportunities

Ajayi sees a goldmine in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly in providing affordable homecare services. As more Nigerians seek convenient and cost-effective healthcare solutions, she believes this is an area ripe for expansion.

Mobolaji Ajayi’s journey is an inspiring example of spotting opportunities, overcoming challenges, and staying ahead in a rapidly changing market. Her story is a testament to the power of innovation and resilience in entrepreneurship.
