Felicitas Amah, also known as Kendra, shares her entrepreneurship story with a journey that began in 2018. However, like many Nigerian Secondary School Graduates, she didn’t immediately enter university. To stay busy, she decided to learn a skill and there came Fashion designing.
Finding her Footing: The Early Days of Stylewithkendra
Although, fashion designing wasn’t her initial choice, dissatisfaction with tailors led her to say, “Why not go learn this and make dresses for yourself?” Thus, her journey commenced.
In the early months of 2018, as a novice lacking basic sewing knowledge, Kendra embarked on her training with passion and vigor. Despite the challenges, she quickly picked up the easy steps and soon could create simple dresses. However, in late 2018, she gained university admission, hindering her continued training. Eager yet saddened, she postponed learning temporarily, planning to resume once settled in school.
The year 2019 brought the challenge of juggling school activities and classes, leaving no room for Kendra to continue her training. Despite doubts and anxieties about her abilities, she decided to take up other entrepreneurship skills in school. The turning point came when compliments on her creations boosted her confidence, marking the beginning of overcoming her fears.
Kendra’s Inspiring Journey in Building Stylewithkendra -Overcoming Doubts and Embracing the Journey
Fast-forward to late 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Kendra returned home to resume her fashion training after a year-long hiatus. However, with new trends and reduced passion, she questioned whether she could continue. Despite the lack of excitement, she persevered, making dresses for herself and her siblings.
In 2021, Kendra’s passion reignited when compliments poured in for a dress she made. The ASUU strike in 2022 became an unexpected opportunity, pushing her to pursue her dreams. Unable to physically train, she sought help from friends and neighbors. She primarily invested time in watching YouTube videos and finally acquired her first sewing machine in May 2022.
January 2023 marked a bold step with the creation of an Instagram account, @stylewithkendra_. Uncertain about the content initially, Kendra’s breakthrough came in February when a friend offered her the opportunity to design outfits for an ushering agency. Overcoming doubts, she accepted the challenge, securing her first gig a brand.
A World-Class Vision: The Future of Stylewithkendra
Despite initial stress and fear, the success of the outfits at the festival boosted Kendra’s confidence. Subsequent months saw her balancing school with dressmaking, gaining recognition and positive reviews. Kendra’s journey from a fashion novice in 2018 to a budding entrepreneur in 2023 reflects her dedication and perseverance.
Looking ahead, Kendra envisions Stylewithkendra becoming a world-class female fashion brand, bridging the gap between online and offline fashion. Her brand aims not only to be a label but also a lifestyle and an example of the strength of enthusiasm in pursuing one’s dreams.
