Just 21 is Belle Whipple, who took the bold move, opening her coffee shop while a student at Ferris State University. While other students were struggling through midterms and courses, Belle was attempting to perfect the latte designs and manage a staff. Belle’s Coffeehouse in downtown Big Rapids, Michigan, became the retreat of students and locals alike where they could unwind, do work, and have fantastic coffee.
Her vision was not strictly about drinks. It was to create a place where one is made to feel at home, no rush, no stress, good vibes, and great coffee. With no working experience of running a café, Belle took the plunge feet first into business based on her dream and supported it with actions.

Setting up shop downtown was not easy. Belle Whipple soon learned that managing rent, employees, and inventory wasn’t as easy as it seemed on Instagram. She needed to be so many things at one time — boss, barista, repair woman, and marketing manager — yet continue working towards her degree. And yes, she still did homework!

Even after working long hours and experiencing difficult days, Belle never lost her vision. Her mother was her greatest supporter, and the small team she built was on the same page as her. Throughout, Belle stayed on target, learning as she went along and modifying her approach when needed.

Belle’s biggest lesson? Start anyway. People will question your idea. They’ll ask if you’re ready. But waiting for the perfect time only delays your growth. Belle believes the best way to learn is to do it. Make mistakes, fix them, and keep showing up.
