Abubakar Sadiq Falalu: Transforming Nigeria’s Rice Industry with Innovation

Innovative entrepreneurs are transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, and Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Falalu stands tall among them. As the founder and CEO of Falgates, a dynamic rice farming and milling enterprise based in Kaduna State, Falalu addresses Nigeria’s rice deficit with creativity and determination.

A World-Class Education

Falalu’s path to agricultural innovation began far from the rice fields. His academic journey took him across continents, first earning dual Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology in 2010. Not stopping there, he completed a Master’s in Management at Swinburne before traveling to China. Where he earned another Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China in 2014.

Planting Seeds of Change

When Falalu discovered that Nigeria consumes approximately seven million tons of rice annually while producing only 2.7 million tons, he didn’t just see a problem—he saw his calling. This gap inspired him to establish Falgates in 2012, with operations officially launching in 2016.

Today, Falgates employs over 200 people across three Nigerian states—Kaduna, Kebbi, and Niger. The company reached an impressive $450,000 turnover in 2017 and boasts an annual production capacity exceeding 5,000 metric tons of various rice products.

Harvesting Recognition

Falalu’s entrepreneurial vision caught the attention of Forbes Africa. Which featured him in their prestigious 30 Under 30 list in 2018. Beyond accolades, his work through Falgates addresses critical national challenges by reducing dependence on imported rice. Thereby creating employment opportunities, strengthening local economies, and championing sustainable agricultural practices.

Growing the Future

With his sights set on making Falgates a household name throughout Nigeria and becoming one of the country’s largest employers, Falalu continues to nurture his vision. His blend of technological know-how and agricultural innovation exemplifies how visionary entrepreneurship can address food security challenges while empowering communities.

In transforming from software engineer to agricultural pioneer, Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Falalu proves that with the right blend of education, vision, and determination, Nigeria’s agricultural potential can indeed be realized—one grain of rice at a time.
