Victor Ochen Inspiring Leadership and Peace Across Africa. Meet Victor Ochen, the inspiring Founder and Executive Director of the African Youth Initiative Network (AYINET). Particularly, born in northern Uganda, he endured 21 years in refugee camps, surviving on one meal a day for over seven years. Moreover, growing up amidst the violent conflict that displaced over 3 million people, Victor witnessed the brutal realities of war. Precisely, 60,000 children were abducted and forced into becoming child soldiers, including his own brother. But rather than succumb to despair, he rose to action.
At just 13, while still in the camps, Victor courageously founded a Peace Club, leading a bold campaign against child soldier recruitment. Nevertheless, in the heart of northern Uganda’s war zone. His determination and resilience made him one of Africa’s most influential human rights activists, a symbol of hope.

However, through AYINET, he’s already provided reconstructive medical care for over 21,000 war survivors. This includes those who suffered from rape, mutilation, and gun violence. Notwithstanding, as a tireless advocate for peace, he addresses the root causes of conflict in Africa. Subsequently, demonstrating the power of tolerance and nonviolence.
Nonetheless, Victor’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2015, Forbes Magazine named him one of Africa’s ten most powerful men. Moreover, Archbishop Desmond Tutu praised him as “the new hope for Africa.” That same year, he became the first Ugandan and the youngest African to receive a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. More so, with honours like the Elyse Treaty Award and Pan-Commonwealth Youth Workers Award. Consistently, he stands as a beacon of leadership and compassion for Africa’s youth.
Presently, Victor serves as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Justice, passionately championing Sustainable Development Goal 16. He’s also on the Global Advisory Group for the UNHCR, tackling issues like gender, forced displacement, and protection.
