Federal Government Plans Capital Grants for Student Entrepreneurs

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a capital grant scheme aimed at supporting student entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas.
The Federal Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmad, made the announcement during the 70th anniversary celebration of Kaduna Polytechnic.
According to the minister, the proposed initiative will provide financial support for students with viable business ideas and innovative solutions, helping them turn ideas into sustainable businesses.
The Goal of The Grant Scheme
The planned grant scheme is expected to complement Nigeria’s student loan programme by supporting students beyond access to education. Instead of only helping students stay in school, the initiative could also help them build businesses while studying or after graduation.
“In addition to the ongoing student loan scheme, the government is also working on capital grant initiatives that will support students with creative and innovative ideas,” Minister Suwaiba Said Ahmad mentioned in her words.
The Grant Scheme as a Solution for Student Entrepreneurs
For many student entrepreneurs, access to startup funding remains one of the biggest challenges. From product development to marketing and operations, many students struggle to scale ideas due to limited capital. If implemented, this initiative could reduce that barrier and make early-stage funding more accessible to students building startups.
The minister explained that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s broader focus on youth empowerment, innovation, entrepreneurship, and skills development.
Although details such as eligibility, application timelines, and how grants will be distributed have not yet been announced, the development signals growing recognition of student-led innovation in Nigeria.
What Students Entrepreneurs Should Note
For student entrepreneurs, this may be the right time to begin preparing. Students with startup ideas may benefit from refining their business concepts, building simple business models, and keeping records of projects or innovations while waiting for further details on the grant.
