When Jesutofunmi Oniyide stood out among over 3,000 applicants to win the Red Bull Basement Nigeria<\/a> competition, it wasn\u2019t just because of technology. It was because of how he thought about a real problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third-year Mechatronics Engineering student from Lagos State University of Science and Technology built a solution focused on something many overlook: livestock health and the financial impact of animal loss on farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Oniyide sees a Problem Others Ignore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oniyide\u2019s idea didn\u2019t start in a lab. It started with observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noticed that farmers often lose animals to illnesses that could have been detected earlier. In many cases, those losses directly affect their income and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought it didn\u2019t make sense that with the amount of technology available today, things like this still happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset of questioning everyday problems is what shaped his approach to innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oniyide and Purposeful Building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

His solution, Vital-Tag, is a wearable device designed for livestock. It tracks basic health indicators like temperature and heart rate, and sends updates to farmers through SMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the features, what makes the idea stand out is its intention: making early detection simple and accessible, especially in environments where advanced tools are not always available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also introduced behaviour tracking, such as monitoring feeding patterns, to give farmers more insight into their animals\u2019 condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thinking Beyond the Idea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Winning the competition wasn\u2019t just about having a working concept. Judges, including Odunayo Eweniyi, highlighted the practicality of his solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That practicality reflects something important about Oniyide: he isn\u2019t just building for innovation\u2019s sake but also for real-world use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even details like battery life show this thinking. The device is designed to last long without frequent charging, making it more suitable for farmers who may not have constant access to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for Student Entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oniyide\u2019s story is a reminder that strong ideas don\u2019t always come from trying to be overly complex. Sometimes, they come from paying attention, asking simple questions, and building solutions around real needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For student entrepreneurs, it also shows that innovation is not limited to popular industries like fintech or social media<\/a>. There are still many everyday problems waiting to be solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While winning Red Bull Basement Nigeria is a major milestone, it\u2019s also a starting point for Oniyide. It places him among a growing group of young innovators using technology to solve practical problems and proves that students can build solutions that go beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
