Who Is Boyan Slat, and Why Should Students Care?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Boyan Slat is a Dutch inventor and entrepreneur<\/a>. He\u2019s also the CEO of The Ocean Cleanup<\/strong>, a non-profit using tech to remove plastic from oceans and rivers. Slat started the project in 2013 when he was just 18. While most students <\/a>were still figuring things out, Slat had already given a TEDx talk and was sketching ideas for his prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ocean Cleanup uses floating barriers shaped like a giant U. These barriers move with the ocean’s current, gathering plastic waste into a central point. From there, it’s collected and shipped to recycling centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no need for boats to chase trash. The system lets the ocean bring the waste in. It’s smart, scalable, and low-cost compared to manual cleanups. They\u2019ve already removed over 10 million kilograms of plastic from oceans and rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
