Jacob Marsh <\/span>was<\/span> <\/span>not <\/span>your <\/span>average<\/span> engineering student. While his <\/span>peers<\/span> <\/span>were<\/span> <\/span>cracking <\/span>equations, he was <\/span>creating<\/span> <\/span>an<\/span> <\/span>actual<\/span> tech brand <\/span>in<\/span> his dorm room. <\/span>Jacob attended<\/span> <\/span>the University of Southampton<\/span> to study Civil Engineering<\/span>, but in 2012, something <\/span>changed<\/span>. The Raspberry Pi, a <\/span>learning-to-program <\/span>mini computer<\/span>, had just <\/span>been released<\/span>. He <\/span>saw<\/span> one <\/span>major<\/span> <\/span>problem<\/span>\u2014it <\/span>had<\/span> <\/span>no case. Just a <\/span>naked<\/span> circuit board. <\/span>So Jacob leaped. He created a simple 3D-printed case and <\/span>sold<\/span> it <\/span>as <\/span>ModMyPi<\/a>. The <\/span>prototype<\/span> was <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>hobby<\/span> <\/span>project<\/span>. But when he <\/span>listed<\/span> it online, he got over 300  pre-orders <\/span>within<\/span> <\/span>two days<\/a>. That<\/span>‘<\/span>s when <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>light<\/span> <\/span>bulb went off in his head<\/span>\u2014he was sitting on a goldmine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jacob Marsh Turned a Prototype Into \u00a31.3 Million<\/h3>\n

At first, Jacob had<\/span> <\/span>no<\/span> <\/span>business<\/span> <\/span>experience<\/span>. But with <\/span>the <\/span>help <\/span>of<\/span> a university business hub called SETsquared, he moved from 3D-printing cases to mass-producing them <\/span>via<\/span> injection molding. <\/span>It<\/span> started in his uni <\/span>bedroom<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>turned into <\/span>a full-<\/span>fledged<\/span> company. <\/span>ModMyPi<\/span> <\/span>achieved<\/span> a <\/span>\u00a3867<\/span>,<\/span>000<\/span> <\/span>turnover<\/span> <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>one<\/span> <\/span>year<\/span>. The next year, it was already climbing <\/span>towards<\/span> \u00a31.3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon enough<\/span>, the brand <\/span>was<\/span> <\/span>not<\/span> <\/span>only <\/span>selling cases <\/span>but<\/span> <\/span>was <\/span>a <\/span>destination<\/span> <\/span>website<\/span> for Raspberry Pi <\/span>hardware<\/span> and accessories. Jacob even <\/span>had<\/span> a full-time team and started <\/span>shipping<\/span> <\/span>international<\/span> orders. All this, while still <\/span>working<\/span> <\/span>on completing <\/span>his degree.<\/span><\/p>\n

His hustle proved that student entrepreneurs do<\/span> <\/span>not<\/span> <\/span>have <\/span>to wait <\/span>until<\/span> graduation to build a real business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lessons Every Beginner Should Know<\/h3>\n

Jacob Marsh wasn’<\/span>t <\/span>a business <\/span>school type of man<\/span>, but he had three <\/span>main<\/span> things:
\u2013 He spotted <\/span>an<\/span> <\/span>opportunity<\/span> in the market.
\u2013 He started small and built <\/span>up<\/span>.
\u2013 He <\/span>looked<\/span> for <\/span>support<\/span> and <\/span>sped<\/span> <\/span>up<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

SETsquared gave him resources<\/span> and <\/span>mentoring<\/span> that made a <\/span>big<\/span> difference. But the <\/span>fuel<\/span> <\/span>was<\/span> <\/span>lit<\/span> <\/span>when <\/span>Jacob<\/span> <\/span>took<\/span> <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>leap<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>faith<\/span> <\/span>and started with <\/span>zero business experience<\/span> whatsoever<\/span>.
