From hobby to heat: Kristian\u2019s pizza passion sparked the flame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kristian Tapaninaho wasn\u2019t looking to be a founder. He just wanted to make great pizza. But the home ovens? Nope. Not hot enough. Not fast enough. And definitely not fun enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what did he do? He turned up the heat\u2014literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With help from his wife and future co-CEO, Darina Garland, Kristian took the first steps toward what would soon become Ooni, the backyard pizza oven that rocked the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Kristian and Darina fired up their idea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The duo started small. Like, really small. They got a local metal welder\u2014yes, the kind who usually makes gates to build a scrappy prototype. In 2012, they threw it up on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They hoped to raise \u00a37,500. They got over \u00a317,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big win? Yep. But then came the real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darina and Kristian were running an education business <\/a>at the time. Ooni was just a side hustle. But the moment they woke up to orders that came in while they were sleeping?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Game-changer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darina said it best: \u201cWe made money while we slept. What have we been doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From then on, they went all in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risky moves and shipping chaos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After Kickstarter, they scrambled to find a factory. The UK didn\u2019t work out, so they tried Finland. It worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the road wasn’t smooth. They juggled baby duties, education gigs, and business calls. It was messy, wild, and full of risk. But they kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, just when COVID hit and orders were being canceled left and right, something unexpected happened. Online sales exploded. UK first. Then the U.S. followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, Ooni was cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ooni becomes the hottest name in pizza<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

They went from \u00a314 million in 2019 to \u00a3157 million today. And here’s the cool part? No private equity. Just smart moves and big dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As demand soared, so did their team. They brought in talent from Breville, Dyson, and even YETI. That growth? It wasn\u2019t luck. It was strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristian puts it this way: \u201cIdeas are great, but without the right people, it doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristian and Darina mix it up\u2014literally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Ooni dropped a new product: the Ooni Halo Pro Spiral Mixer. It\u2019s made for pizza lovers, but feels like bakery-level tech. No more clunky machines. Just sleek design and smooth dough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, it works like magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they’re not just innovating, they\u2019re making Pro Tools more affordable. That\u2019s the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darina\u2019s advice? Protect your passion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting a product-based business isn\u2019t all toppings and sunshine. There\u2019s IP to protect, feedback to collect, and markets to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristian says: \u201cFigure out what makes your idea unique. Then build around that.\u201d
Darina adds: \u201cDon\u2019t skip IP. It saved us more than once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their biggest tip? Don\u2019t build just for the cash. Build because you love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than ten years later, Ooni isn\u2019t just a product. It\u2019s a pizza revolution. It\u2019s family time. Backyard vibes. That perfect crust on a Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
